The Triman logo on my packaging

If you sell to a consumer in France, French sorting rules reach your packaging, wherever you are established.

The Triman logo has been mandatory since 1 January 2022, with a one-year period to sell through packaging already printed.

The logo never travels alone. It appears with the sorting information, the info-tri, which says which part of the packaging goes in which bin.

The logo is not a recycling claim, and printing it does not register you. Registration and the sorting mark are two separate duties, and you owe both.

Where the packaging is too small, the mark and the sorting information may be shown by other means, including on the product page. Check the current rule for your format before you print.

What does not apply

The Green Dot (Der Grüne Punkt)

It is the trademark of a scheme, not a French legal requirement. It does not replace Triman.

German or Italian sorting marks

Each country's marking rule is its own. Triman is French, and it does not cover Germany or Italy.

A mark on the product itself, for most goods

The duty here is on packaging and paper. Textiles, furniture and electrical goods carry their own marking rules.

Approval of your artwork

No authority signs off the label. You apply the specification and keep proof of what you printed.

What to do first

01List every part of the packaging a French buyer will separate.
02Join a producer responsibility organisation for packaging and get the unique identification number.
03Take the current Triman and info-tri specification from the scheme and lay it out to size.
04Print it, and keep a dated copy of the artwork with your file.
