EPR in France for an Etsy seller

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) means you pay for the waste your packaging and your product become. In France it starts at the first parcel to a French consumer.

You join a producer responsibility organisation, a scheme such as CITEO for packaging, and you then hold a unique identification number issued by ADEME.

The number is per stream, not per company. Packaging, paper, textiles, furniture and electrical goods are separate registrations, and a seller can owe several.

Etsy asks for the number, and marketplaces have been answerable for unregistered sellers since 1 January 2022. Selling without it puts your French sales at risk.

A seller established outside France may register directly or appoint a mandataire, an authorised representative for the scheme. That is a service you buy elsewhere.

  3. 03Record the unique identification number for each stream.
  4. 04Put the number in your Etsy account, and the Triman mark with sorting information on the packaging.
  5. 05Diarise the yearly declaration of tonnage.
